About the course
Health and learning are deeply connected, but they're rarely managed that way. Educators see the symptoms — missed school, shutdowns, inconsistent effort, "unmotivated" kids — without always seeing the medical condition, brain impact, or system barrier underneath. This course changes that. Through six implementation modules, you'll learn to build a Health–Body–Brain Connection Logic Chain that traces a student's medical condition all the way to its educational impact, using real examples like pediatric heart disease, asthma, and epilepsy. You'll practice the 5-Layer Why, a root-cause investigation method that moves teams past surface-level behavior labels toward the real, often health-related, driver of a student's challenge. You'll use the Say This, Not That language guide to reframe how you talk and write about students — shifting documentation from blame to actionable support. And you'll walk through a Stop. Start. Shift. system risk review to identify school practices that unintentionally create barriers to access. Along the way, you'll build a Student Success Binder, request functional-impact documentation from medical providers using a proven script, complete a School Performance Assessment across home and school reporters, and create a Long-Game Plan that helps a student build self-advocacy skills for life beyond K–12. By the final module, you won't just understand the connection between health and learning — you'll be equipped to lead it. The Leadership Facilitation Strategy helps you translate your own growth into a concrete commitment: sharing tools with colleagues, setting clear health-integration expectations, and building a leadership team that includes nurses, psychologists, counselors, administrators, and families.
